Ways to Test Blood Glucose
By Ken Wilssens

It is very important for anyone who suffers from Diabetes should test their levels of blood glucose on a regular basis. By knowing what there blood glucose levels are the person is then in a much better positioning of being able to manage the disease when they find that there levels are not close to their normal range. So just what ways are available for a person to test their blood glucose levels? In this article we will take a look at what a person can use.

The most common way a person is able to test their blood glucose levels today is through using a home monitoring kit.

With this method a person will prick their finger with a small sharp needle (lancet) in order to provide a blood sample. They then put the sample on to a test strip which they then place into the monitor. The monitor will then analyze the sample on the strip and provide a reading of what the person's blood glucose (sugar) level is. A number of the new devices on the market can provide a result within 15 seconds or less and are then able to store the information until it is required for future use. Some machines like the Ascensia Breeze by Bayer are able to store 100 test results at any given time.

As well as storing the results these machines are also able to calculate what a person's average blood glucose levels have been for a particular period of time. Whilst there are even some monitors which come with software that allows you to download all this information on to your PC and helps them to track their diabetes much more effectively.

Today some of the more recent monitoring systems available allow you take blood samples from other sites on the body rather than just the finger tips. Normally you will be able to take samples from either the upper arm, forearm, the thigh or the base of the thumb. But by using this sites you may find the results you get are completely different from those that you receive from your finger tips as blood glucose changes more quickly in this part of the body than anywhere else.

The other monitoring system on the market that was introduced in 1998 uses a laser (beam of light) to draw blood. It is this beam of light which will penetrate the skin and so you avoid the discomfort associated with using the lancet. Therefore by using this kind of monitor you are reducing the amount of pain and discomfort that you would normally feel.

Blood Glucose Meters - Tips to Get Free Glucose Meter
By Tehmina Mazher

As diabetic you must know the importance of monitoring blood sugar level. The most efficient and easy way of monitoring blood sugar level is with the help of glucose monitor. Glucose monitors are not that expensive but test strips are costly. The diabetic needs a new strip at every test and if he has to test several times in one day he requires many strips.

Diabetics that have health insurance can enjoy free diabetic supplies including test strips. Medicare generally covers 80 % diabetic supplies which include test strips, blood glucose meters, batteries and lancets.

There are some companies that offer these meters free of cost and some other diabetic supplies to insurance holders and other Medicare recipients. If some diabetic does not have health insurance but have limited income he can apply for Financial Assistance Program to have free glucose meter.

There are basically three ways of getting a free glucometer;

First is to visit online companies that offer glucometer for free. In this case you just have to fill an online form. The company will ship a free glucose meter and other diabetic supplies free of cost. You simply have to enter some personal information. Some companies even require a prescription for blood glucose monitor.

Second is to visit local pharmacy that offers free glucometers. Some reputed pharmacies offer a free glucose meter on the purchase of test strips. This however requires health insurance.

Third idea to get free one is to order it directly to manufacturer. Again this requires health insurance.

Using an online service is the best way to have totally free Diabetic Testing Supplies and information.

Diabetes Testing - How to Test Your Blood Sugar Level and Stay Within the Normal Range
By Charles Hermann

Here are few options you can use to test your blood sugar with diabetes:

1. Blood sugar monitoring at home: This method is the most common. It involves pricking your finger with a sharp needle (professionally designed for). You will then need to squeeze the finger in order to obtain a drop of blood which you will then place on a test strip. This test strip will then be placed into a meter which will in turn determine you blood sugar level. The meters on the market today come in different shapes sizes and features, but they all provide the exact same information - your blood sugar level. These test kits are available at your local pharmacy, and in some cases you can find free test kits on the Internet, but again, you have to be vigilant.

2. Alternative meter test kits. Over the years, newer meters now allow you to test body parts other than your fingertip; these include your upper arms, your forearms, the base of your thumb, and your thighs. Despite these additional options drawing blood from your finger tips remains the most used. This is simply because the blood sugar level in your finger tips, show changes way quicker than any other part of the body. Why is this important? Simple. After exercise, or a meal your blood sugar tends to fluctuate quite a bit. This is why the finger tip remains the most popular.

3. Drawing blood through laser. Sometime in 1998 the Food And Drug (FDA) administration approved a meter laser device capable of extracting blood through a precise laser beam on a finger. This device was really in response to the numerous complaints of discomfort and pain caused by the regular pricking of the finger.

4. The continuous glucose monitoring system. This device involves a very small tube which is inserted under your skin. The device then collects small amounts of fluids and measures the sugar content of these fluids over a 72 hour period.

5. The Gluco Watch. Again, the FDA approved in 2001 the GlucoWatch which is device that is like a watch. This watch-like meter helps the diabetes patient measure his or her blood sugar level three times per hour over a 12 hour period. This is one of the first diabetes testing meter that that is really non invasive.

All these diabetes testing meters perform one and the same thing - some less, and others more. However, all the newer devices are still being rigorously tested. Maybe, one day, the pricking of your finger will become something of the past, but today, this method remains the most reliable, and the most popular. As long as you know what your normal blood sugar range should be, it doesn't really matter which diabetes testing method you use. Here is a sample blood sugar level chart:

Normal blood glucose levels: 70-110mg before meals and 70-140 mg after breakfast, lunch or dinner.

For people with diabetes the preferred blood glucose levels should be:

90-130mg before meals and after meals it should not rise to above 180mg.

It is important to remember that the body gets its sugar from your daily carbohydrate intake. Lowering your carbohydrate intake is a proactive way to help lower your blood sugar level.

Having diabetes is unarguably an inconvenience, but if you manage your diabetes properly you will still be able to "breathe in" and continue to enjoy life to the fullest. Do not hesitate to contact your doctor for additional diabetes testing info.

Some of the insurance companies offer free supplies to the patients who are suffering with diabetes. If you hold any health insurance card you must contact your customer service agents to know if you qualify for free diabetes test supplies. Many health programs like Medicare, Medigap and Medicaid offer to deliver these supplies to your doorstep. They even offer prescription service programs for the people who are covered under the specific insurance programs.

Some public medical institutions also offer to perform free diabetes test for the people who cannot afford to pay the hospital bills for testing. If you talk to some insurance companies like Medicare or Medigap they will explain you about different insurance covers under which free supplies are available for diabetes testing. Most of these health insurance companies are associated with diabetes service organizations who offer free supplies.

It is very necessary for diabetes patients to monitor blood glucose levels regularly. For which they need supplies like test strips lancets and blood glucose meters. These supplies are quite expensive and people who cannot afford to purchase need to rely on free supplies of this material. Most of the diabetes patients are aged and live in old age homes, they are all retired and do not have much income to meet the expenses. All these conditions force them to look for free diabetes tests and supplies.

You can also search online for different companies who offer to deliver the diabetes supplies to your doorstep free of cost. Testing meters are only onetime investment but the regular strips costs very high and it is very difficult for the common people to purchase strips regularly. For applying for free supplies you need to fill and submit forms that are available online.

You need to furnish your personal information, mailing address, physician details and your health insurance details. They will consider your application and if they find that you qualify for the free strips they will inform you and start the delivery of free supplies.

Blood Glucose Meters Or Urine Test Strips - Which is Best to Monitor Your Diabetes
By John Ngijseh

For every diabetic monitoring your own blood glucose (sugar) levels can be vitally important in controlling your diabetes. The current treatments in diabetes whether medicines or diet focus on trying to keep blood sugar levels as close to normal as possible.

There are two main ways to monitor the body's glucose levels, testing for "blood" glucose and testing for "urine" glucose. Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages. Which method you choose depends on what your doctor advises you.

Blood Glucose Meters

Testing blood glucose levels has become very simple and very accessible thanks to a whole range of blood glucose meters on the market. Checking glucose in this way is the most accurate method. This is especially important for patients with Type 1 Diabetes (Insulin dependent) and some patients with Type 2 Diabetes requiring insulin. This is because some these patients can make adjustments to their insulin dose depending on the blood glucose test results. Also patients with diabetes may experience very low blood glucose levels called "hypoglycaemia" or very high blood glucose levels called "hyperglycaemia". Often there are signs and symptoms of both. Using a blood glucose meter to get an exact reading can help reassure or confirm that action must be taken.

How Does A Blood Glucose Meter Work?

The 2 main meters on the market at present are Accu-chek Aviva and One Touch Ultra. Both meters use the same basic principle. A blood sample is taken usually from the finger using a finger pricking device. The sample is placed on a specially coated test strip which is then inserted into the blood glucose meter. Within a minute the meter will give you a result. The main drawback of this method is that it does require pricking your finger each time to take a blood sample. This for some can be nuisance. However, with recent advances in meter technology the amount of blood required for Accu-chek Aviva and One Touch Ultra is minimal. This in turn leads to less pain when pricking the finger.

Urine Testing

Urine strips have the advantage of being pain free but the disadvantage of not bring as accurate as a blood glucose meter.

For some, urine testing is a more then adequate method to test glucose especially for diabetics who do not need exact blood glucose levels. Glucose can take time to appear in the urine. Thus always use a blood glucose meter when testing for low blood glucose levels (hypoglycaemia) as it will give you an accurate reading at that time.

How To Use Urine Testing Strips

The main two makes of glucose testing strips are Clinistix and Diastix. Click on Clinistix to learn more about how to use the urine strips.

Interpreting Your Results

How you interpret your results depends very much on the goals your doctor has set out for you and what you are testing for. A key point to remember is that blood glucose levels will be affected by food and diabetic medication.
